Research Project HyDSerbia

Motivation and Problem

The main motivation for the project outlined in the funding guidelines for “International Hydrogen Projects” is to open up the Serbian hydrogen market as one of the foreign markets of strategic importance for the implementation of Germany's import strategy for green hydrogen and derivatives. This requires important general findings and country-specific conclusions about the exploitable market prospects, sensible implementation options, the necessary bilateral and multilateral legislative adjustments, and the future-oriented design of a market that is strategically important for the Federal Republic of Germany.

Project Objectives and Approach

Based on a comprehensive review and analysis of specific project sites in the implementation country, the study will provide important general findings and country-specific conclusions on the exploitable market prospects, the sensible implementation options, the necessary biand multilateral legislative adjustments, and the future-oriented design of a Serbian market that is strategically important for the Federal Republic of Germany. These findings will be transferred to practical implementation in a subsequent large-scale project.

In the Fraunhofer CSP sub-project, energy system simulations and algorithmic analyses and optimizations will be used to develop models and system/component configurations for scalable coupled PV systems for hydrogen and derivative production, with particular consideration of the boundary conditions in Serbia. The aim is to compare the integrated project approach planned in the overall project with a systematic, overall technical modeling level for planning and technology selection and, using digital design processes, to enable technical and economic evaluation and validation of the industrial upscaling of H2 and derivative production at planned locations.
