Next generation of Si wafers for the European value chain of tomorrow

Fraunhofer CSP is part of the Europe-wide EMPOWER project, which is working to develop a resilient and sustainable European PV value chain for tomorrow.

EMPOWER is a Europe-wide project in which 23 teams from leading research institutions, high-tech and R&D companies, and market-oriented industrial partners from six European countries are working hand in hand to create the European PV value chain of tomorrow. A particular focus is on high quality, sustainability, and a resilient supply chain. This will ensure a secure and independent European energy supply. In addition, innovative technologies will reduce both capital expenditure (CapEx) and operating expenditure (OpEx). EMPOWER has set itself the goal of saving a total of 45% in PV manufacturing costs compared to current technologies. Furthermore, the innovative technology enables a 20% reduction in the carbon footprint.

The EMPOWER project considers the entire PV value chain, from the manufacture of Si wafers to cost-effective, highly efficient solar cells and finished modules. With its expertise in the crystallization of Czochralski silicon, Fraunhofer CSP is contributing to the development of the next generation of Si wafers.
