Yield-optimized Small Photovoltaic Modules in Exposed Concrete Facades

Research Project SOLARcon

Motivation and Problem

Architecturally adapted and customized facade solutions combined with yield-optimized photovoltaic elements are a promising strategy for adding value to previously unused space in urban areas and thus developing alternative market segments for photovoltaics in electricity generation. Government subsidies for the integration of photovoltaic elements into buildings (BIPV, building-integrated photovoltaics) through the use of previously unused facade space are enabling the economically and ecologically sensible development of energy-plus buildings.

Project Objectives and Approach

The overall objective of the project was to develop functional prototypes and demonstrators of small PV modules that can be integrated into aesthetically pleasing, yield-optimized prefabricated concrete facade elements. Research was conducted to determine which materials should be selected and dimensioned for an electrically, optically, and mechanically optimized PV module concept for facade/wall installation and under which technical and economic conditions production can take place.
