Metrology Solutions for the Solar Industry

Research Project MeDiaSo

Motivation and Problem

The solar industry is facing new challenges due to emerging cell technologies, electrically conductive adhesives, and functional glass coatings. Existing metrology systems are reaching their limits – especially regarding inline measurement accuracy, evaluation of bonding materials, and lifecycle analysis under real-world environmental conditions.

Using the MK4 lab-to-fab metrology platform, groups of current solar cells and future cell technologies are examined in terms of their performance characteristics as a function of varying measurement sequences.

Project Objectives and Approach

MeDiaSo aims to improve measurement precision and reliability in solar cell production. The project will develop new evaluation methods for PV adhesives and glass coatings, while strengthening expertise in photovoltaic metrology.

The project utilizes a lab-to-fab metrology platform to analyze current and future solar cell technologies. It also includes mechanical and electrical stress testing of conductive adhesives and the development of robust diagnostic methods for coated glass surfaces.
