FIP-H2ENERGY@KENTECH

Bundling of Complementary Competencies along the H2 Value Chain

Since 2020, the Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems (IMWS) has been conducting research on the import of green hydrogen in collaboration with Korean scientists. In September 2022, the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for Hydrogen Energy at the Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KENTECH) was established, laying the foundation for profound collaboration with partners in South Korea. The FIP-H2ENERGY@KENTECH is situated at the Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KENTECH) in Naju, South Korea.

During the initial five-year period, Fraunhofer IMWS, along with five other Fraunhofer institutes, collaborates with Korean scientists at KENTECH on the development of technologies across the entire hydrogen value chain. Fraunhofer IMWS leads this project and contributes its expertise in material characterization and developments for Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolysis, as well as photovoltaic-driven hydrogen production. The involvement of the five Fraunhofer institutes - Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT, Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM, Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology IGB, Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology UMSICHT, and Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems IWES - allows for the consolidation of diverse competencies in this broad field of technology.

KENTECH, founded in 2021 with a focus on applied energy sciences, aims to become a leading institute for hydrogen research in South Korea in the coming years, primarily contributing its expertise in hydrogen liquefaction to the cooperation. Together, scientists will research hydrogen logistics, focusing on various aspects of production, conversion or liquefaction, transportation, and utilization of green hydrogen.
